Biography

Henry William Jewell was born in 1842 in Buckland Brewer, Devon, England to Henry Jewell and Thirza (Prouse) Jewell. His birth was registered in Bideford, Devon in the first quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Prouse.^[1]

In 1851 Henry W Jewell (age 11 [~9]) lived at Bilsford Hill in Buckland Brewer with his father Henry (39, Farm Labourer), mother Thurza (35), and three siblings: Theadore (7), Garlinda (3), and Alfred (3 months).^[2]

Based on the birthplaces of his siblings, Henry and his family emigrated to Canada after 1854 and before about 1856.

In 1861 Henry W Jewell (age 18) lived in Ops, Victoria County, Ontario.^[3] Henry's family lived in Mariposa, Victoria County: father Henry (48, Farmer), mother Thiesy (44), and seven siblings: Orlando (19), Jepeniah (14), Gorlenda (12), Alpheret (11), Albert (8), Rosinda (5), and Eliza (2)

In 1871 Henry William Jewell (age 26 [~29], Farmer) lived in Mariposa with his father Henry (56, Farmer), mother Thirsay (53), and four siblings: Alfred (19, Farmer), Albert (17, Farmer), Rosinda (14), and Beliza (12).^[4]

In 1881 Henry Jewell (age 39, Farmer) lived in Mariposa with his widowed mother Thurza (63).^[5]

Henry William Jewell (age 36, residing in Mariposa, born in England, Bachelor, Farmer, son of Henry & Thercea) married Alice Amelia Sederick [aka Sedgewick] (age 19, residing in Mariposa, born in Snowdon, Spinster, daughter of William John & Martha) on 10 Dec 1884 in Lindsay, Victoria County, Ontario.^[6]

Henry and Alice had four daughters:

2. Isabella Edith May (Jewell) (Johnson) Brown (1887-1936)

In 1891 Henery Jewell (age 41 [~49], Farmer) lived in Mariposa with his wife Alice (26) and two daughters: Violet (6) and Eda (3).^[7]

Henry Jewell passed away on 7 Mar 1901 in Lindsay - he was 57 years old, born in England; his occupation was laborer.^[8]
