Biography

Maja Stina was born on 5 Sept 1821[1] as the daughter of Johannes Svensson and Stina Larsdotter in Knutstorp, Utvängstorp parish.[2][3] She worked a year at Skogshemmet 1839-1840,[4] then returned to her family and moved with them to Ballarp in 1842.[5] She worked at Fallagärdet from 1845 until 1849,[6][7] when she married Johannes Larsson (unfortunately, there are no marriage records for Utvängstorp 1811-1861, but the HHE records say 26 May) and moved to him in Beateberg.[8][9] Both Johannes[10] and their two children died of rödsot (dysentery) in 1855, and in 1857 Maja Stina married Johannes Johansson (again, no marriage record exists, but in the HHE record he is listed as moving both to and from Beateberg that year) and moved with him and their daughter to Bastebo soldatboställe in nearby Sandhem parish.[11][12] In 1864, her father died and the family moved back to Ballarp, but in 1869 they emigrated to America.[13]

Maja Stina had two children with Johannes Larsson and three with Johannes Johansson:

  1. Johanna Charlotta, born 16 Jun 1849[14] (the date is given as 16 Sep in the Beateberg HHE record, but was corrected in the death record; note that it is but three weeks after the wedding) and died 19 Sep 1855[15]
  2. Josephina Gustafva, born 31 May 1854[16] (although the HHE record says 15 May) and died 6 Oct 1855[17]
  1. Anna Sofia, born 19 Jul 1857[18] (again, quite close to the wedding date)
  2. Anders Gustaf, born 18 Apr 1860[19]
  3. Joseph, born 10 Feb 1764[20]

She was married to Johannes Johansson (John Johnson) 11 Apr 1857 in Skaraborg, Sweden. They were the parents of three children; Hannna Sophia Johnson, Andrew G. Johnson and Joseph Johnson. They came to America 13 July 1869. First settling in Wataga, Illinois for four years then they came to Keokuk, Iowa, where they remained respected citizens until their deaths. Maja Stina passed away 11 Nov. 1893.[21]
