Gustaf "Gust" Johnson was born on 18 August 1867 in Locknevi, Kalmar Län, Sweden.

He married Rosabel "Rose" Strayer on 4 September 1899 at the home of Rev. C.O. McCulloch, 921 21st St., Rock Island, Illinois, United States. The Reverend was the pastor of 1st Methodist Episcopal Church, 1820 5th Ave., Rock Island, Illinois, United States.
