Bellfield Johnson is a part of US Black heritage.

Bellfield Johnson was born about 1827 in North Carolina.[1]

Bellfield married Mary Reed on 6 Feb 1851 in Lawrence County, Ohio.[2] They lived in Fayette Township, Lawrence County, Ohio where Bellfield worked as a farmer. Their census records suggest they had at least eight children:[3][4]

  • Hamilton L Johnson, born ~1855
  • Ella G Johnson, born ~1856
  • Nancy M Johnson, born ~1858
  • Lydia A Johnson, born ~Apr 1859
  • Thomas Johnson, born ~1864
  • Sarah Johnson, born ~1866
  • Martha Johnson, born ~1868

Bellfield married Christina Woods on 24 Aug 1871 in Lawrence County, Ohio.[5] In 1880, they lived in Fayette Township, Lawrence County, Ohio with Bellfield's children.[6] By 1900, Bellfield was a widower and he continued living in Fayette Township until his death.[7][8]

Bellfield died on 6 Mar 1916 in Fayette Township, Lawrence County, Ohio.[9]

Research Notes

  • Bellfield was not found in any census records in 1850 or earlier, searching Ancestry and FamilySearch on 17 Aug 2023. This might indicate that he was enslaved in his early life, but his name is frequently mistranscribed, so he might just not be showing up in search results.
