Rachel was born in 1934 to Simon Vickers Johnson and Honora O'Leary.
She won a scholarship to the Lady Margaret High School for Girls in Cardiff and became a community activist and the first black head teacher in Wales.
She married Rupert Campbell in 1953 and had four children including Elaine and Simon.
She passed away in 2017.
On 29 September 2021, a statue of Betty Campbell was unveiled in Cardiff. It was the first Monumental Welsh Women statue.
