Jacob Henry Johnson was born on 21 May 1837[1] in the township of East Gwillimbury, Upper Canada.[2] His parents were Samuel Johnson and his wife Henrietta. Around the time of Jacob's birth, his father Samuel was recorded as resident of lot 2, concession 3, East Gwillimbury,[3] so it is possible that this is where Jacob was born and grew up.
Jacob married Anna Sevilla Doan on 22 August 1864. One of the witnesses to their marriage was Jacob's younger brother Nelson.[2]
McEvoy's 1870-71 County of York directory lists Jacob H. Johnson as a freeholder at lot 2, concession 2, East Gwillimbury.[4]
According to the Doan family genealogy, Jacob was a builder who constructed several significant buildings in Newmarket, and he and Anna later moved to Huntsville.[5]
On the 1911 census, Jacob and Anna were living in the household of their son George Doan Johnson in Toronto.[6]
