Thomas Jones was born in St. Brides Major, Glamorgan, Wales.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
This was probably around February 1846. (See research notes: he gave various dates, getting progressively younger!)
Ohio
Thomas Jones was an immigrant pioneer who participated in the westward expansion of the United States. Join the Immigrant Pioneers Project.
After his mother's death, his father William (Sr.) took Thomas and his brother William (Jr.) to the United States. This was probably in 1851.[4] - see research notes.
Thomas Jones was part of a Welsh farming community in Ohio.
The family settled on a farm in Raccoon Township,[1] Gallia County, Ohio in a predominantly Welsh community - Thomas grew up in Ohio speaking Welsh at home.[5]
Thomas Jones was a Freemason.
He became a carpenter[2][6] specialised in making the wagons[3]
and carriages[4] which were in high demand in pioneer days.
He was also a freemason (the masonic emblem of a compass and inverted set square is on his headstone[8]).
Thomas is recorded in the 1860 census aged 14,[1] and the 1870 census aged 22,[2] living on the farm near Thurman in Raccoon Township, Gallia County, Ohio with his father William, stepmother, brother William, and stepsisters Sarah and Margaret Elizabeth. (Thomas' stepmother, Mary Ann Jones, married William Jones Sr. in Gallia County, Ohio on 12 Mar 1856.[9])
The neighbouring household of another Welsh farmer, David Mathias, included a daughter Ann Mathias who was about 8 years younger than Thomas.[1][10]
Thomas and Annie had a total of nine children[13]- see separate section, below.
They named their first child William[3][13][14] (born 17 Sep 1873[3][13][14]) after Thomas' father.[6]
In the 1880 census Thomas (33) and "Anna" (24) were living in Raccoon Township, Gallia County, Ohio with their first four children:[3]
William (7), David (5), Arthur (3), Edith (1). Thomas was a wagon maker.[3]
Thomas was named in his father William's will[15]
as executor of the estate as well as being his main heir. On his father's death in March 1893 he inherited both the farm and personal property.[15](See William Jones for details and a transcript of the will.)
Annie died in 1898[16]
and was buried at Ebenezer Cemetery, Raccoon Township, Gallia County, Ohio.[16]
The 1900 census shows Thomas in Centerville village, Raccoon Township as a 51 year old carriage maker, widowed, with six children:[4]
Arthur 23, Rosco 18, Elizabeth 12, James 8, Eva 7, Carl 4. His brother William was living nearby with wife Jennie and family.[17]
Washington
Thomas Jones was a homesteader in Washington.
Having supplied the wagon trains heading West for many years, Thomas joined one himself after Annie's death and moved the family to Washington.[18]
On 30 Jun 1906 Thomas received a land patent granting him 160 acres of land in Grant County, Washington under the homestead act of 1862.[19]
This was the SE quarter of section 30 in township 021N, range 023E, of the Willamette meridian.[19]
Thomas was in Douglas County, Washington on 03 Jun 1915 when he filed his declaration of intent to apply for US citizenship[20][21]
In 1930 Thomas, 81 was living with his youngest daughter Evelyn and family in Almira, Lincoln County, Washington: George 39 and Evelyn 37, with children Ellsworth 17 and June, 12.[5]
He had been living in Almira for five years.[6]
