Biography

William Claude Jones was born in South Kingstown on 11 June 1893. [1] In 1915 he worked as a patrolman for the U.S. Coast Guard at the Point Judith Station. [2] When he registered for the draft on 5 June 1917 William resided on High Street in Wakefield and worked in a munition plant for the DuPont Company of Wilmington, Delaware. He reported military service in the Coast Guard. [3] No further record for William has been found until 4 December 1928 when he married Sarah Jewel Barnett in Harrison County, Mississippi. [4] Sarah was born in Shady Grove, Alabama on 28 March 1904 and was the daughter of Benjamin M. Barnett and Addie Kent. [5] The couple resided with Sarah’s parents two years later when William was employed as a mate on a steamship. [6] The marriage did not last long since Jewel married second in Harrison County to Alfred R. Lyngby on 24 June 1931. [7] Jewel married a third time, on 4 September 1947 in Harrison County, to Edward Guillermin. [8] They were divorced in 1949 in Escambia County, Florida. [9] William was enumerated in the 1940 U.S. census among the vessel crews in Wilmington, Delaware. He was a ship’s officer in the merchant marine. The vessel or company name is difficult to read but may be Tembeck-Bennett Co. He reported that he had lived in Houston, Texas in 1935. [10]

The last record of William that has been found is his World War II draft registration card on 27 April 1942. William resided at 1304 Crawford in Houston and worked for the Strachan Ship Company. [11]
