Biography

Marthe Joslain is estimated to have been born around 1580, possibly in Petit Fetilly near La Rochelle in the historical province of Aunis, where she later lived.[1] Petit Fetilly ( or possibly Petit Fe Tilly) may be the name of the family farm leased by her.[2][3] Further research into the legal transactions regarding this property in the city records of La Rochelle is needed to confirm this information.

She married Vivien Jean in the early 1600's and had five known children as follows:[1]

  1. Pierre l'aine, a ploughman with oxen, m. (1) Ozanne Bruneteau (2) on 13 Jan 1642 Marie Coloin or Coullon, a native of Ste-Cecile, in Poitou, daughter of the late Jacques and Nicole Chevillard. He had, from his first marriage: (a) Pierre bn. ~1632 (b) Barthelemi bn. ~1635 and (c) Suzanne bn. ~1638.[1]
  2. Vivien Jean
  3. Pierre lejeune, a ploughman with oxen, m. (1) on 18 Oct 1654 Marie Guillon, daughter of Pierre, a labourer, residing in the parish of Lhoumeau, in Aunis, and of the late Marie Mousnier, in the presence of Marie Joslain, his mother, Pierre Jean, the elder, his brother, a ploughman with oxen, residing at Maussidung, Parish of Laleu; m. (2) on 9 Jun 1667 Elisabeth Roy, widow of Marc Aubuert in the presence of Pierre Guyon, his nephew by way of Marie Arnay (Harnais), his wife; Jeanne Guillon, wife of Jean Michellet, master potter of tin, his first cousin, and Jean Michellet lejeune, a first cousin once removed. Pierre Jean died on 24 June 1672 and the inventory of his property was held on the same day by the notary judge, at the request of Elisabeth Roy, his widow, guardian of Marie-Anne Jean, her daughter as well as Pierre (bn. ~1651), Marie (bn. ~1656), Andree (bn.~1658) and Catherine Jean )bn.~1663), from the first marriage. Also mentioned were Liette Jean, living at Mouilliette, the paternal aunt of the minors, of Barthelemi Jean, ploughman with oxen, residing in Romagne, and Rene Jean, his brother, master shoemaker, residing in La Rochelle, their paternal cousins.[1]
  4. Jeanne m. Jean Harnais or Arnay, both deceased before 1666, when Marie, native of the parish of Brizambourg, in Saintonge, marries, on 13 June 1666, (c. Rabusson) Pierre Guyon, ploughman, residing in the village of La Fond, parish Notre-Dame, native of the village of Charniers, parish Notre-Dame de Villenien (?), in Poitou, son of the late Pierre, oxen ploughman, and Simone Mirande, in the presence of Pierre Jean, maternal uncle of the bride, Rene Jean, Gabriel Baud and Suzanne Jean, her first cousins, Pierre Bruneteau, uncle by way of Marie Coullon, his wife, formerly the wife of Pierre Jean, Jean Bailly, first cousin by way of Suzanne Jean, his wife; Pierre Guyon and his wife test? on 13 March 1669 (same notary).[1]
  5. Liette mentioned in her brother, Pierre lejeune died in 1672.[1]

On 4 August 1639 Marthe Joslain was noted to be a widow living in Petit Fetilly in the paroisse of St-Maurice.[1] On this date she transported to her eldest son Pierre Jean l'aine and his wife, Ozanne Brunaudeau, who were at that time living in the Mireul district of La Rochelle, the enjoyment of the small holding of Petit Fetilly. [1] (Does this mean she transferred ownership?) In 1646, she rented to Salomon Perpaillon, shoemaker, a house close to the new port in La Rochelle, for 60 pounds a year.[1] More research is needed to determine her exact date of death.
