Surname Note

The Junker patronymic has its roots in Germanic origin and carries the connotation of a "young lord." Originally, this term referred to young noble warriors in medieval Germany who were training for knighthood. The Junker moniker later transformed into an aristocratic title denoting the lower-ranking members of the German nobility, forming what is known as the Junker Class. These individuals would engage in military service in exchange for land grants and bureaucratic authority over their respective domains. Eventually, the Junker designation evolved into a last name. The surname Junker is correctly pronounced as Yuenker, although it can also be phonetically represented as YOON-ker to ensure clarity.

The descendants of Johannes Peter Junker underwent a process of assimilation in America that resulted in a significant transformation of their familial surnames, with three distinct variations emerging: Younger, Younker, and Yunker. Intriguingly, it was not uncommon for siblings within the same family to adopt different variants of these anglicized names.

Research Notes

According to the book "The Younger's" it appears that Michael Younger took his mother to Brazil with him when he emigrated, but his mother would have died in 1833, his stepmother died before 1857. The question would be who was the book referring to?

Book "The Younger's" by Frank J. Windholz and Albina (Younger) Fr. Raphael Engel, O.F.M. Cap. in his "The Joseph Engel Family' wrote:

Turning to the village of Herzog, Russia we meet a few families by the name of Younger or Junker, one of whom was Peter and his wife Margaret nee Mermis. His father was known to mother as mentioned above, our great-great-grandfather. Unfortunately his name is not known."[9]

Michael and John Peter were brothers.

Michael Younger, his wife, children and mother went to Brazil.

According to Lawrence A. Weigel, Michael and his mom died in Brazil.

Michael's wife Margaret and children including her son John M. Younger and his wife Catherine Margaret Pfeifer came to the United States from Brazil. They settled in Ellis County, Kansas.
