Harry Karis graduated from the Estonian Agricultural Academy (EPA) in 1954 as an agronomist. He worked as a senior teacher at the EPA in 1957–62, and as a senior researcher at the Tallinn Botanic Garden in 1962–92. He studied the disease resistance of plants and the spread and biology of phytopathogenic fungi (especially powdery mildew. In 1966, he participated in expeditions to Siberia and to the Far East in 1986. He was the winner of the 1996 Karl Ernst von Baer Prize.
