Biography

Charles David Keeling (April 20, 1928 – June 20, 2005) was an American scientist whose measurements of carbon dioxide at the Mauna Loa Observatory provided a record of anthropogenic contribution to rising CO2 levels, which causes global warming. The Keeling Curve portrays the progressive buildup of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, in the atmosphere on top of the seasonal variation which is cyclical (see figure at right).

Keeling worked at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography for 43 years during which time he published many influential papers. SIO Director Roger Revelle convinced Keeling to continue his work there. Revelle was also one of the founders of the International Geophysical Year (IGY) in 1957–58 and Keeling received IGY funding to establish a base on Mauna Loa in Hawaii, two miles (3,000 m) above sea level.

He married Louise Barthold on 28 July 1954 in Los Angeles, CA. His parents were Ralph Franklin Keeling and Grace Sherburne. Her parents were Walter Jensen Barthold and Josephine Salmon.

His son Ralph Keeling is a professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and continues his research on CO2 and global warming.

I was a grad student at Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1982-86 and Keeling's lab was on the floor above mine in Ritter Hall. The Keeling Curve was posted on the wall in the corridor outside his lab. Next to it was a firehose in its cabinet, looking very similar!
