She was orphaned in 1842 when her parents died within 6 months of one another. She and her brother, Perry, were taken in and raised by neighbors James Guest (1793-1855) and Ruth (Gregg) Guest (1802-1882), who lived on a farm near Toolesboro, Iowa.

She attended college in Iowa City, Iowa for eight months prior to her marriage.

An obituary published in the Wapello Tribune Friday, March 9, 1900 reads as follows:

"Margaret Ann, wife of John Hayes, Sen. of Toolesboro, was born May 24, 1832 in Vermillion County, Indiana, and died at the family residence, Friday morning, March 2, 1900.

She was married to John Hays, May 10, 1849, and spent the greater part of her life near Toolesboro. She was the mother of 11 children, seven of whom (four sons and three daughters) with the husband survive her.
