Biography

Margaret was born in 1880. She was the daughter of Levi Keffer and Martha Moody. She passed away in 1960.

Sharon Bittinger, great-granddaughter of Margaret KEFFER and Emanuel SHAFFER, told me that her grandmother said she had a half-brother named Clarence KEFFER. In the 1900 census of Lower Tyrone Township in Fayette County, Clarence is listed as the grandson of Levi KEFFER and Martha Jane MOODY. Sharon believes that Clarence may have been the son of Margaret KEFFER born out of wedlock. According to the 1900 census he was born in November 1899.

In 1910, widow Martha Jane KEFFER is living in Perry Township (she is indexed as Martha J. MEPPER). Her grandson Clarence is listed with her, as are sons George and Elmer, and Elmer's wife and child..

In 1920, Clarence is listed with widow Martha Jane KEFFER in Perry Township; he is listed as her son, and that is how I had listed Clarence in my database, but I now believe he may be Martha Jane's grandson rather than son.

Maggie, wife of Emanuel SHAFFER, is listed as 22 years old in the 1910 census, in her first marriage for 5 years, with 3 living children, who are also listed with them. So there is no indication of a previous child (Clarence). But that would be expected, perhaps. In 1920, Margaret is listed as 40 years old, and in 1930 she is listed as 50 years old. In the 1900 census, when she is living with her parents still, her birthdate is listed as Jan 1880, and this is consistent with the 1920 and 1930 ages given for her, so I assume the 1910 age listed for Maggie SHAFFER (22) is incorrect.
