Biography

Mike was born on 5 February 1932 in Williston Park, an incorporated village in the town of North Hempstead, Nassau County, Long Island, New York. He was the son of George Francis Kelley and Constance Gervais (Campbell) Kelley.^[1]
His family always used his baptismal name (Michael) instead of his given name of Thomas. If someone called the house asking to speak to Tom, his wife and children knew they didn't know him and was likely trying to sell him something.

In the 1940 U.S. Census, he was recorded as "Michael Kelley", 8 years old and the fourth of five children, living in Westbury, New York, on Long Island.^[2]His family didn't have much money and Mike left school sometime between the 8th and 9th grades to help support his family. He held various jobs, working in an auto salvage yard and pumping gas in a service station. When the 1950 U.S. Census was taken, Mike was 18 years old, living with his parents, his older brother Dick and his younger brother Pete.^[3] He entered the Navy a short time later. When he enlisted, it was discovered that his surname on his birth certificate wasn't spelled the same as the rest of his family. It was spelled "Kelly" instead of "Kelley". He decided not to change it.
