Biography
The son of John Kelley and Mary (Berry) Kelly, Virgil Kelly was born in Maud City, Oklahoma[citation needed] in 1908, residing there with his family.[1] His family migrated further west to California, settling in 1920 in El Centro, California, in Imperial County.[2]
Virgil married Lillian (Chapman} Kelly, the daughter of Robert Chapman and Myrtle M. Houghman. In 1940, they lived in Wasco, California, where Virgil worked in the oil fields.[3] Virgil registered for the World War II draft when he was 32, registering in Avenal, California on October 16, 1940.[4] He stated that he lived at 128 S. Merced Street in Avenal, California and that he worked for Rocky Mountain Oil Well Drilling Company, located on Pomona, California. Virgil was described as 5'10" tall and 200 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes; he did not enlist. In 1950, Virgil and his family lived in East Los Angeles, California, where he had purchased a machine shop.[5]
Virgil Kelly passed away in Los Angeles, California at the age of 76[6][7] and is buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California.[8]
