Biography

Ruth was born Ruth Repine Kelly on 26 June 1860 to her parents James Edward Kelly and Margaret Repine. About 1877 there was an encounter with Ginnis Repine toward Ruth and her father involving a gun and resulted in court action and fines attached. Then shortly after, another incident involving Ruth and her father toward Ginnis also involving a gun and court action and fines (source needed). On February 9, 1878, Ruth gave birth to Edith M Kelly. It does not appear that Ruth was married.

Also in about 1878, Robert M. McConnell came to live with the family and help with the farm of Ruth's handicapped father. In Nov 1881, Ruth and Robert were married. The death certificate of Ruth's daughter Edith's identifies Robert McConnell as her father as told by Edith's daughter Ruth. But there is still question as to whether it was a biological or adopted relationship and there is an underlying feeling within the family that Edith was never really accepted as part of the family with her siblings based on later encounters. In 1910, the census indicates that at that time Ruth had a total of twelve children and at that time in 1910, only eight of those twelve were living. The eight living in 1910 are Edith M Kelly, Emma Culver McConnell, James Kelly McConnell, Agnes Richardson McConnell, Jennie Kebler McConnell, William Day McConnell, Annie Irene McConnell and Frances Willard McConnell. Maggie Varlage McConnell survived till the age of nine and died before the turn of he century. The other three children that died before 1910 have not been identified yet.

Ruth and Robert were members of the Blairsville Lutheran Church.

There were several real estate transfer's between Ruth and her father, and Ruth and her sister Maggie. Much of this land is believed to be part of Repine, Kelly and McConnell estates:

received real estate transfer from James E Kelly, a lot in Blairsville for 800.00

transferred 35 acres in Burrell to Margaret McConnell for $972.55

Ruth died just shy of her 80 birthday on 13 Jun 1940 in at her home Grandview Farm on Jacksonville Road near Blairsville. She is buried at the Blairsville Cemetery, Blairsville, Indiana, Pennsylvania

   Mrs. Ruth K McConnell, 80, Leaves 60 Direct Descendants.

   Leaving sixty lineal descendants, including two great-great-grandchildren, Mrs. Ruth (Kelly) McConnel, wife of Robert McConnell, died in her home, Grandview Farm, Jacksonville road, near Blairsvile, at 9:45 p.m. Thursday. A daughter of James E. and Margaret Repine, she was born June 26, 1860 and had always lived in the community where her death occurred. She was a member of the Blairsville Lutheran Church. Surviving with husband are these children: Mrs. Emma Biggerstaff of Homer City, Mrs. Angus Fleming of West Lebanon, Mrs. Jennie Kissinger of Erie, Mrs. Frances Axe of Aspinwall and James K. and William D. McConnell, both of Blairsville, R.D. Also surviving are 48 grand-children, ten great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
   

   Funeral services will be conducted in her late home, Grandview Farm, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. W.W.Zundel will officiate and interment will be in Blairsville Cemetery.
