"He and his mother came to the United States in 1823 during one of the great potato famines. At age 9, he went to sea as a cabin boy and "followed the sea" for 17 years on whaling vessels. His mother was of the Catholic faith, but he left the church as a young man. Several older brothers came to the United States later. His father is buried in Ireland.
Christopher married Gertrude Case on February 14, 1861 in Fredrickburg, Iowa.
They decided to leave Iowa and head for Washington state. When they arrived in Franktown Colorado in 1865 the Indians were on the war path, so they built a fortress at Franktown and never went any farther. That is where and when the homesteaded." OUR HERITAGE People of Douglas County
