John James was a son of Nicholas Keogh (variant spelt as Kahoe & Kehoe in the NSW BDM indexes). Nicholas arrived in Sydney from Ireland at 18 years of age with an older brother Denis on 13 Mar 1841 as an assisted immigrant on the Berkshire. According to the immigration record they were of Catholic denomination and sons of Patrick & Catherine Keogh born in Sheephouse townland in Mulrankin Parish, County Wexford 7, 8. Four years after arrival Denis died in Sydney in 1845. The death was recorded in the church parish burial record under the phonetic surname spelling of Keho with his age recorded as 22. A note in the record stated he arrived in the colony on the Berkshire and at the time of his death was a resident of the Benevolent Asylum
