Biography

Charles Buchanan Ker was born on 17 January 1826 and was baptised on 5 March 1826 at Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland[1]. He was the son of Robert Dow Ker and Augusta Buchanan.

He married Irish-born Alicia Noble on 3 July 1856 in Bombay, India[2]. Notice of their marriage was printed on page 2 of the Enniskillen Chronicle and Erne Packet dated 18 September 1856:

MARRIAGES. July 3, at Byculla Church, Bombay, E.I., the Rev. W. Robertson, M.A., Charles Buchanan Ker, Esq., C.E., to Alicia, eldest daughter of the late William Noble, Esq., Cooltrain, Brookeborough[3]

They went on to have at least nine children.

In the England Census of 1871, Charles B. Ker (aged 45 and a Civil Engineer) was recorded living with his wife Alicia Ker (36) and their children Ethel M. Ker (8), Lille H. Ker (2) and Winifred A. Ker (1) at Anlady Road, Lansdowne House, Teddington. Also in the household was his sister Charlotte Buchanan Ker (43)[4].

By the time the 1881 England Census was enumerated on the night of Sunday 3 April 1881, Charles B. Ker (aged 55 and a Civil Engineer) was recorded living with his wife Alicia Ker (46) and their children J. E. Ker (20 and a Student of Medicine), Ethel M. Ker (18), Lily Ker (12), Winifred Ker (11) and Charles Arthur Ker (5) at 12 East Coombe Villas, Greenwich. Also in the household was his married daughter Bessy Squires (23) and her husband R A Squires (34, Clergyman without Cure of Souls)[5].

His wife Alicia passed away in 1883.

Now a 60 year old widower, her married, secondly, 41 year old Anna M Lloyd (the daughter of Thomas Lloyd and Julia Hall) on 9 November 1886 at St. Peter's in Brighton, Sussex, after Banns[6]. The witnesses were his brother-in-law Thomas Francis Lloyd and his son John Errington Ker.

Notice of their marriage was printed on page 3 of the Munster News dated 13 November 1886:

KER and LLOYD.- Nov. 9, at St. Peter's Church, Brighton, by the Rev. E. Roxby, assisted by the Rev. J. Howell, Charles Buchanan Kerr [sic], Esq, of Clifton, to Anna Maria, youngest daughter of the late Thomas Lloyd, JP, DL, of Beechmount. county Limerick.[7]

They had no children together.

In the 1891 England Census, Chas B Ker (aged 65, a Railway Director and Retired Civil Engineer) was recorded living with his second wife Anna M Ker ( 45) and his three children Lilian H Ker (22), Winifred A Ker (21) and Chas Arthur Ker (15) at 6, Royal Park, Clifton, Barton Regis, Gloucestershire. Also in the household was his grandson Ernest K Squires (8) and three household staff[8].

Charles Buchanan Ker was still residing at 6 Royal Park, Clifton, Bristol when he passed away on 13 March 1899[9]. Notice of his death was printed on page 7 of the Globe dated 17 March 1899:

KER. —On the 13th inst., at 6, Park, Clifton, Bristol, Charles Buchanan Ker, Esq., aged 73.[10]

His Will was proved on 4 May 1899 at London to the reverends James Theodore Inskip and Frederick William Carnegy, clerks[11]. Effects: £12395 10s. 10d.
