Biography

Elijah was a Friend (Quaker) was accepted as member of the Deer Creek Monthly Meeting, Indiana, 1872
  • Elijah Iles Kerlin was born on the 25th of October, 1871 to Joseph B. Kerlin and Mary Small in Franklin Township, Grant County, Indiana. [1][2][3][4]
  • In the spring of 1879, Elijah's mother died. He is 7 1/2 years old.[5]
  • The 1880 U. S. census finds an 8 year old Elijah living with his father and three siblings, his mother having died the previous spring and his eldest brother and three of his sisters have married and left home. He is reported to be a single white male of 8 year and the son of Joseph B Kerlin. He attended school. It is also reported that he was born in Indiana and both of his parents were born on Pennsylvania.[6]
  • On the 15th of January, 1896 Elijah married Florella Marie Florea in Grant County, Indiana.[7][8]
  • The 1900 U. S. census found Elijah living in Green Township, Grant County, Indiana with his wife and two children and his father. It is reported that he is a 27 year old white male. He was born in October 1872 and has been married four years. His wife has given birth to two children, both of whom survive to date. He was born in Indiana, his father in Tennessee, and his mother in Indiana. He can read, write, and speak English. He farms rented land.[9]
  • The 1910 U. S. census found Elijah living with his family in Liberty Township, Grant County, Indiana. He is reported to be a white married male of 37 years. His wife is a year younger than him and he has four children. He and his mother were born in Indiana, his father in Tennessee. He can read and write, he speaks English. He farms rented land.[10]
  • The 1920 U. S. census found Elijah living with his wife, two sons and a daughter in Washington Township, Blackford County, Indiana. His two sons, 16 years and 29 years) work on the farm, and his daughter (14 years) is in school. It is reported that he is married, white male of 49 years. He can read and write, he rents his farm, he and his parents were born in Indiana.[11]
  • The 1930 U. S. Census finds Elijah back in Grant County. He is living in Monroe Township with his second wife and his daughter, her husband and her three children. It is reported that he is a married white male of 56 years. He farms rented land, he was born in Indiana, his mother was also born in Indiana, while his father was born in Tennessee. He can read and write and speaks English.[12]
  • Elijah's wife, Florella Marie Florea, died on the 17th of March, 1932 in Marion, Grant County, Indiana.[13]
  • The 1940 U. S. census finds Elijah living alone in Jackson Township, Wells County, Indiana. It is reported that he is a 86 year old widowed, white male. He farms land that he owns and which is valued at $1700. He lived on and worked the same farm in 1935. (Farm Schedule # 192).[14]
  • On the 25th of October, 1943 Elijah married Laura Howell in Huntington County, Indiana.[15] It is reported that Elijah's residence at the time of his marriage was on a farm in Wells County, Indiana, while his wife's residence was Huntington County, Indiana.
  • The 1950 U. S. census finds Elijah.[16]
  • Elijah suffered a stroke on the 16th of September, 1953 and died six days later on the 22nd of May, 1953 at his usual place of residence, Warren, Jackson Township, Wells County, Indiana (R.R.2). He had lived at this location 21 years. It is reported that he was a married white male who made his living farming; that he was born on the 25th of October, 1871 in Grant County to Joseph Kerlin and Mary Small. His wife, Laura Kerlin, is listed as the informant on his death certificate.[1][2]
