Father of

My grandfather, Sherman, better known by his middle name, Duane, was born in 1914, the son of Guy Kindig and Ada Beeghley Kindig. Duane was the oldest of four children, who tragically lost their mother at a young age to tuberculosis. Duane was just eleven and his youngest sibling only 20 months old when their mother passed on.
Duane met Dorothy Ann Ross at a public dance in Bronson, Iowa and married her on February 28, 1938. Together they had four children, Joellen, James, Janice and Judy.
On April 1, 1944 he entered the U.S. Navy and served until December 20, 1945. During his service in WWII, he served on the USS Menelaus in the South Pacific while Dorothy cared for their three young children at home in Iowa.
After the war, Duane operated Kindig's Place, in Chatsworth, Iowa as well as operating a tank wagon and running a service station at Westfield, Iowa for several years. He was also employed as a mechanic for Gassman Motors in Akron, Iowa for many years. Later in life he worked as a welder at Load King in Elk Point, South Dakota for nine years, and retired in 1978.
Duane was a former mayor of Westfield, Iowa. He lost his wife, Dorothy in 1986 after a long illness and 48 years of marriage. Following Dorothy's death, Duane kept busy and stayed active in the Akron Senior Citizens Club. He battled esophageal cancer for a number of years with humor and grace, eventually succumbing to that disease in 1990 to the very great sadness of all who knew him. He was beloved as a kind and generous man with a infectious sense of humor. He was buried in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetary in Akron, Iowa with military honors.
