Arthur Levar King was born on 30 January 1907, in Gingin, Western Australia, Australia.[1] He was the son of Arthur King and Hannah Jones.
Arthur enlisted on 22 May 1940 in Calingiri, Western Australia. He was attached to the 2/2 Field Park Company. He worked as a Machine Miner at the time of enlistment. Arthur embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia aboard the transport ship HMAT S4 on 21 September 1940 with a destination to the Middle East. He disembarked on 14 October 1940 in Palestine. By the 31 December 1940 he was in Egypt. [2]
On 4 April 1941 his unit, along with other units known as the ANZAC Corps, embarked for Greece to support the Greeks. Unfortunately they were overwhelmed by the German Troops and were ill-prepared for the upcoming onslaught. Arthur was reported missing in action on 6 June 1941 in Crete. On the 4 December 1941 he was wounded prior to being taken as a Prisoner of War in Crete. He was officially declared a POW on 21 January 1942 and was interned to Stalag XIII-C.[3]
On the 27 April 1945 he was recovered and returned home to Gingin, Western Australia.[4]
He died on 3 April 1971, in Perth, Western Australia, Australia, at the age of 64.[5] He was buried in Northam Cemetery, Northam, Northam Shire, Western Australia, Australia.[6]
