Biography

Phoebe Ann Kinney was born on 01 Jun 1855 in Jay, Essex, New York, USA as the third child of Henry E. Kinney (1825-1857) and Vienna (Horton) Kinney (1824-1861). [1] She had two siblings, namely: Henry Dayton Kinney (abt.1848-1913), and Susan Aurora Kinney (1850-1944). (see Research Notes)

She appeared on the census of 5 Sep. 1860 in the home of her mother at Jay, Essex County, New York.[2]

Phoebe was orphaned at the age of 6 when her mother died of tuberculosis. Her father had died four years earlier of the same disease leaving the family in a financial crisis. Their home was foreclosed on in the St. Lawrence Superior Court on 13 Aug 1859 [3] and the young family moved in with Viana's sister, Julia Ann, who had married Phoebe's paternal uncle, Luther Kinney. [2] It was only a short time after the move that Phoebe's mother died and the children were adopted out.

Phoebe was adopted by Oren and Betsey C. (Hewitt) Torrance, a farm family that also lived in Jay. Not much has been revealed about Phoebe's life with the Torrances. They already had two boys, Norman and Henman and Phoebe appears as the middle child at age 10 in the 1865 census listed as the "adopted daughter". [4] The family moved to North Elba by the 1870 census and Phoebe is listed as a domestic servant who attended school. [5]

When she was 18, she married Jasper Clark Sanders, son of Oliver James Sanders and Eunice Julia Washburn, on 25 Dec 1873 in Wilmington, Essex, New York, USA. [6] Over the next 20 years, [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] Phoebe and Jasper had seven children that lived to adulthood and there are some interesting naming patterns in the family (see Naming Pattern Chart). Her son, Jasper Clark was almost certainly named after her husband, Jasper C. And her son, James Henry's middle name could have come from her father, her brother or her brother-in-law who all had the first name Henry. Their other children had unusual names and were most certainly named after family members that played important roles in their lives. Her oldest son, Herbert Henman had an unusual middle name which was also the name of Phoebe's adopted brother, Henman Torrance. Eunice Viana most likey got her first name from Jasper's mother, Eunice, and middle name from Phoebe's birth mother, Viana. Her daughter Florence Ellen could easily have been named after Jasper's sister-in-law, Ellen Ryan. Her son, Clarence Leroy had an unusual middle name until realizing that Phoebe's brother-in-law's middle name was also Leroy. And we are left wondering if Elizabeth Claire was named after Phoebe's adopted mother Betsey C whose given name may have been Elizabeth and whose middle name has not yet been uncovered.

Phoebe and Jasper appeared on the census of 1 June 1900 at Wilmington, Essex County, New York.[1]

When her husband Jasper died, Pheobe and her children sold the farm in Wilmington where their families had lived for generations. [12]

Phoebe gave up the farm life and moved to Northbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA where she appears in the 1920 census living with her oldest son, Herbert, and his family and her daughter, Bessie and her family. [13] Herbert had been widowed and was raising two children, so the additional help was probably welcome. When Phoebe's youngest child, Clarence Leroy came home from the war he moved in with them, too. There were three generations living in a rental home in the Village of Whitinsville.

Phoebe's son, Herbert, was an Agent for Studebaker and Chevrolet Motor cars in Whitinsville. [14] And there is a newspaper article about the family traveling back to Wilmington to visit the old home in 1926, a trip of over 250 miles. [15]

In January of 1927, Phoebe had a "shock", was partially paralized on her left side and was unable to speak. [16] At some point she moved back to Wilmington and died on 28 Aug 1927 there. Her oldest daughter, Mrs. A.B. Smith, was the informant on her death certificate. Perhaps Phoebe was living with her at the time of her death. [17]

Phoebe was buried at at Mountain View Cemetery, Upper Jay, Essex County, New York. Her memorial identifies her husband "with whom she shares a stone" and links to those of family members.[18]

Research Notes

There seems to be some confusion regarding the 1855 Jay Census for the family of Henry and Viana Kinney. The census lists:
Line 8 Henry Kinney 29 M
Line 9 H. D. Kinney 29 F wife, born VT
Line 10 Viana Kinney 7 F, daughter, born Essex
Line 11 Susan Kinney 4 F, daughter, born Essex

Viana, the wife was born in Vermont and would have been 29 in 1855. No record of a daugther named Viana, age 7 or born about 1848 has been found. However, the couple had a son H.D. Kinney born that year. It appears the names of H.D, the son, and Viana, the wife, were switched in the 1855 census. And the son was identified as a daughter.

The couple had another daughter, Phoebe, born 1 June 1855 who should have appeared with the family on this census. On line 43 of the same page, the household of Daniel B Newell have a daughter named Susan Kinney age 1/12 listed. She does not appear in the Newell family in subsequent years and perhaps she should have been Phoebe Kinney, the daughter of Henry and Viana Kinney. [19]
