Note IN550On September 26-28, 2008, Bruce Frederick Kinsey, 1st cousin, once removed, was an invited guest at the 50th reunion of the USS Nautilus' historic venture under the North Pole, representing his 1st cousin, once removed Jack Kinsey, US Navy Captain, who was aboard the Nautilus for the trip. In 1957, President Dwight Eisenhower (father-in-law of Julie Nixon, Bruce's 7th cousin), in response to the Russians' launch of Sputnik, the first satellite, planned a top secret mission for the Nautilus to move from the West Coast of the US, to England via the North Pole. A trip never before attempted, and impossible to do with conventional submarines. The Nautilus was the first, and at the time, only, nuclear vessel. It was also the only vessel capable of making the voyage under the ice. The cover story for the mission was the Nautilus would travel, under water, to the west coast of South America and back to test the sailor's ability to spend extended time on a boat submerged.Jack Kinsey, a high ranking officer and Psychologist, invited himself aboard to study the crew's reactions to the task. Anderson, the Nautilus' captain was unable to tell Jack the truth until they were offshore of San Diego. He gave Jack the option of going back ashore, or continuing on the mission. Jack chose to stay, and in doing so, became a PANOPOS (Pacific to Atlantic via the NOrth POle) and a part of history.
