On 29 Dec 1834 York County, SC; Jane Dowdle and Thomas Dowdle (son) are present at the estate sale of her mother Rebecca Kirkpatrick.
Between 1838-1840 in then Benton County, Alabama, now Calhoun County, AL, Case 1, File 14; Jean/Jane Dowdle, widow of Joseph, sues for her share of real estate from his estate. She appoints attorney Wm Jamison of York Dist, SC while she claims residency in Benton County, Alabama. [Benton Co, AL 1832-1858 was renamed Calhoun County, AL]. She signs as Jean Dowdle, the clerk uses Jane Dowdle as her name.
In the 1840 census of then Benton County, now Calhoun County, AL; Robert T Dowdle (indexed as Ro) age 20-29, 1 m under 5, 1 m 15-19, 1 f under 5, 1 f 30-39 (wife?), 1 f 50-59 (his mother Jane would be 59).
After Jane's husband John Prater's death in 1850, his daughter sued the two sons named as administrators of the estate. It was a property dispute. Daughter Elizabeth, wife of Memory Allen, brought the suit.
1 Oct 1859, petitions for partition were filed, asking for the sale of 130 acres on Turkey Creek, York Co, SC that belonged to the dec'd Andrew W Kirkpatrick for distribution amongst the heirs, sister Margaret Kirkpatrick, sister Jane Prater and the two children of dec'd sister [Mary], viz William Rainey and Rebecca P Rainey Hood, wife of Henry Hood.
In the 1860 census of Calhoun County, AL, Jane Prater is 76, b SC, $1000 of land, farming and cannot read or write. In the 1860 Agricultural census, Jane Prater has 100 AC improved, 20 AC not improved, value $1,000. There is a James Prater a few lines down with a farm valued at $2200.
In July of 1863, Jane Kirkpatrick Dowdle Prater died, probably in Calhoun County, Alabama. Burial has not been found yet.
10 Mar 1864 Calhoun County, Alabama. After the death of Jane Kirkpatrick Dowdle Prater, Nancy B Dowdle sued the same Prater brothers, executors of John Prater Estate, for $3,000 damages for cattle, hogs, cash on hand, etc that may have been due Jane Prater's estate.
