Biography

Carl Philipp Kleinforge was born abt. Feb 1833 and christened on 07 Mar 1833 at Sankt Nicolai Evangelisch, Lemgo, Lippe, Germany[1] the son of Heinrich Christoph Juerden (Herman) Kleinsorge and Elise Marie Falke.

In America he was known as Carl but signed his name as Charles

He arrived in New York with his parents in Aug 1848 on the "Flavia" from Bremen.

The family settled in Washington, Osage, Missouri. At the age of 21 Charles left in 1854 to travel to California with a wagon train and cattle herd. He kept a diary in German describing his overland trip from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. The diary was translated by Edward Bode and published in 1982[3].

He became a citizen on 3 Sept 1855 in Sacramento.

He returned to Missouri where on 10 May 1860 in St. Louis he married Mary Lübbering[4] (5 Apr 1836 Germany - 13 Nov 1915 Sacramento, California)

They moved to Sacramento, California by 1862.

Charles Kleinsorge operated the Plaza Grocery Store at 278 J Street,11 12 between Ninth and Tenth streets.

On 5 Aug 1867 in Sacramento, Charles Kleinsorge age 33, registered to vote. On same list were William Kleinsorge, age 26, and Lewis Kleinsorge age 30[5]
