Biography

Carrie Knickerbocker is born on February 17, 1861 in Rochester, New York [1][3]. Her father, Judson Knickerbocker (1833-1914), served as a First Lietenant in the Union Army during the civil war [2]. He worked for a dry goods company in Rochester. Carrie’s mother, Helen Mar Howes (1838-?), was also born in Rochester.

Carrie is nine years old in the 1870 census records, living with her parents and two siblings in Rochester, New York [4]. And she is still with the family in Rochester at the age of 19 in the 1880 census records [5].

In 1882 Carrie marries Thomas Hugh Paterson (1858-1937) [1][6]. Thomas was born near the town of Ingersoll in Canada West (Canada West became the province of Ontario in 1867). He came to the United States sometime in the 1870s and, by the time of the US 1880 census, was living in the town of Sweden, just west of Rochester. He was working as clerk in a store.

Carrie and Thomas have two children:

• Charles Judson Paterson 1883-1962 + (1912) Marion E. Ewer 1887-1959

• Bessie P. Paterson 1886-1946 + (1) (1912) Harlow White 1882-1912 + (2) Wyatt D. Hull c1889-1963

In the 1900 census, Carrie and Thomas are living in Niagara Falls, New York [6]. They have three children: their 17-year old son, Charles Judson, their 14-year old daughter Bessie E. and a 17-year old nephew from Canada, Percy R. Paterson.

By 1905 Carrie, Thomas and the children have moved to the town of Parma – this is between Rochester and Brockport [7]. They are living on a farm with Carrie’s parents, Judson and Helen. It is assumed they are living on a farm as the New York State census of 1905 shows them all living in Parma and describes Judson’s occupation as a farmer. Thomas is working as a salesman for a hardware company.

In June 1906, Carrie dies after a short illness [7]. She is buried in the Brockport Cemetery [8] Thomas re-marries and dies in 1937. He, t oo, is buried in Brockport Cemetery.
