Biography

Esther (Knight) Hilder was born in Kent, England.

Esther's birth is recorded as taking place between Jun - Sept 1865 in N. Aylesford (just outside Maidstone). ^[1] her mother's maiden name is recorded as 'Styles'. This is the only Esther Knight listed in the GRO records as being born in Kent between 1860 and 1870. Her place of birth varies on each of the census returns so she may have been born in Halling, Yalding or Cuxton.

Esther was christened on 14 AUG 1865 at Halling (nr Maidstone) Kent. Her father and mother were recorded as Henry and Sarah Ann Knight ^[2]. A copy of the image is available to view on the Cityark Website, page 10 ^[3]

Note: In the 1881 Census Esther Knight was working for a Miss Mary Fuggle, 62 as a House Servant at New House Wadhurst Sussex. The Fuggle family were reportedly wealthy. One of their homes Fowl Hall was at Yalding Kent which is possibly where Esther was born. There was also a Fuggle family at Paddock Wood.

Esther married Walter John Hilder on 25 December 1883, in Ticehurst, Sussex. Esther's father's name is recorded as Henry Knight. Birth date given as 1862^[4]. ^[5].

General Records Office confirms that the maiden name for the Mother of Walter Henry Thomas Hilder (Esther) was recorded as Knight ^[6].

Esther died between Jul - Sep 1939. The death was recorded in Hendon Middlesex ^[7].^[8]

Esther was buried on 24 Jul 1939^[9].
