Knut was born in 1857 at Frondal, Sogne, Norway. His father was Knut Knutsen (Gerlå) Frondal, his mother was Randi Sjursdatter.[1]
Knut immigrated into the US in 1877 from Norway.[2][1]
Knut was the first in his family to emigrate. Eventually, five syblings and his parents left for America beginning in 1881. They located in Freeborn County, MN. It is presumed that this is also where he went before them and that lead to their choice of location.
In 1880, Knut was in Alaska looking for gold.
Knut married Carrie Knutsdotter.
Their children included:
In the Colorado 1885 Census, Knut and Carrie were living in Leadville, Colorado.[7]
Daughter Nellie was born on 22 Jul 1885 in Leadville, Colorado.
In 1887 son Knut was born at Riceland Township. He died on 16 April 1888.[3]
"They settled in Riceland Township in section 14 on the south shores[of Rice Lake]. ... The home of Knut and Carrie (a log house is still standing) was located about a fourth mile east of the town of Fairfiled. Knut was popularly known as King (Kongen) of Fairfield, possibly becasue he eventually accumulated 640 acres in the area. After Rice Lake was drained, he obtained 146 acres of lake bottom.
In the 1895 Minnesota Census, Knut and family were listed under the last name Frondal.[8]
Knut had an adventurous nature. He traveled twice to the gold and silver mines of Colorado, leaving the farm operation to Carrie and the children. In 1900 Knut was off prospecting again as noted on the census. The family was again using Knutson as a last name.[5]
Carrie had a team of Morgan buggy horses which she used to drive on errands and into Albert Lea. The horses were born racers, and if another rig was seen ahead of them, they were never satisfied until they caught and passed it. Carrie was evidently an excellent horse woman, as one never heard of any run-aways."[9]
In the 1905 Minnesota census, Knut and Carrie were in Riceland. Knut was farming. Their oldest daughter living with them was Randi (15). [4]
In the 1910 US Census, Knut and Carrie were living in Riceland, Freeborn County, MN. Knut was farming. They had children Hansine (17), Peter (16), Clara (14), Knut (12) and Oscar (26 Sep 1899 - )[6] (age 10) living with them.[10]
In the 1920 US Census, Knut and Carrie were living in Riceland, Freeborn County, MN. Knut was farming. They had sons Peter (25) and Knut Jr. (22) living with them.[11]
In the 1930 US Census, Knut and Carrie were living at 1007 Dunham St. in Albert Lea, MN.[2]
Carrie died on 26 Aug 1930 in Albert Lea.[12]
Knut died on 20 Dec 1941 at age 84 in Riceland.[13]
Key questions - where in the US did Knut go when he first came, and how did he meet Karna (Carrie), and when and where were they married? Can't find marriage record in Colorado, MN, IL, or WI. Doesn't mean it isn't there - see for example how his mother's name is transcribed on death record.
Lost source for him in Alaska. Had it documented in the other damn commercial place, but they lost it. Bad bad website. Not the only source they have lost. Seem to especially lose external sources. I have seen it though, just don't have the link anymore. This is why no one should use that evil site.
