Biography

Jan Kooiman was born on 8 December 1867 in Stavoren at 11 P.M. [1]. His birth was registered the next day. The family was Dutch Reformed [2].

Between 12 December 1885 (arriving from Molkwerum) and 7 February 1887 (going to Koudum) he lived in Harlingen [2].

His conscription records tell us that he was a seaman, and that he had to enter service. He had blond hair, blue eyes, and was 1.73 meter tall. At the time, he lived in Molkwerum, a little town in the municipality of Hemelumer Oldephaert en Noordwolde [3].

He was a helmsman on a ship with trade in the US, and in 1888, came to live in Jersey City, NJ, and changed his name to John Charles Coleman

In 1891 he is mentioned in Dutch records as living in Jersey City, New Jersey, United States, making living as a tram conductor [4].

In 1900, he was living in Irving Town [5].

In 1930, he was living in Bloomsbury [6].
