Biography

Harold married Audrey Zastera on Oct. 8, 1944 in Louisville.

WWII - CPL US ARMY - Harold entered military service December 11, 1941, and served with the 126th Infantry, 32nd Division in the South Pacific.

He moved to Two Harbors, Minnesota in 1947.

He died May 4, 2009 and is buried in Silver Creek cemetery. [1]

Harold A Koop, 90, Two Harbors, passed away Monday, May 4, 2009

Harold was born August 9, 1918 to Mabel (Krecklow) and Harold A. Koop Sr. in Louisville, Nebraska, where he grew up and graduated from high school in 1937.

He entered military service December 11, 1941, and served with the 126th Infantry, 32nd Division (known as the Red Arrow Division) in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, Distinguished Service Unit Badge, Combat Infantryman's Badge (most cherished), Bronze Star, Expert Marksman Badge and a USA Victory Medal. While on detached service unloading ships in a combat area, he was injured.

He married Audrey Zastera on October 8, 1944 in Louisville and they moved to Two Harbors in 1947, and have since made their home in the North Shore. He was a member of the United Church in Two Harbors, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, the 32nd Division Veterans, the 126th Infantry Veterans, and the National Rife Association.

Harold was self-employed as a cabinetmaker, and served as a Fire Warden for over 50 years. For 24 years he served on the Board of Directors of the Cooperative Light and Power, and also served on the boards of the Northern MN Power Association and the United Power Association from 1964 to 1982.

He enjoyed his work, hunting, fishing, gardening- raising tomatoes, traveling, agate collecting, and bird watching. Harold was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother, Edith, a daughter, Barbara, three younger brothers and an infant sister.

Harold is survived by his wife, Audrey; two sons, Jonathan (Gayle) and Howard; a daughter, Debbie; four grandchildren, Andrea, Bryan (Sara), Anthony and Amanda; and a great-grandson, Steven. [2]
