Otto Kreuger was born in Germany in 1891. He was the son of Carl Kreuger and Caroline Gross.[1]
The family immigrated to America in 1892, and settled in Chicago, Illinois.
The 1900 Census[2] shows him at age 9 in the home of his parents in Lake View, Chicago City Ward 25, Cook County, Illinois. This census records that everyone in the family can read and write in English, except Otto, the youngest.
It is suspected that Otto's parents were deceased by the middle of the first decade of the 1900's, but documentation has not yet been found.
He was sent to Michigan when he was about 14 years old, to a farm owned by Allen Robert Beattie (1852-1941) and Victoria Alice (Coleman) Beattie (1856-1928), who had no children of their own. Mr. Beattie became his unofficial "guardian."
The 1910 Census[3] shows him at age 18, in the home of Allen R and Alice V. Beattie. His relationship to them is shown as: "will adopt."
His WWI Draft Card in 1917 confirms his birth date as 7 Aug 1891. He states that his birth place is Hecenburg, Germany, that he came here when he was six years old, and has decided to become a citizen.[4]
The 1920 Census[5] shows him at age 28 in the home of his "guardians" in Williams Township, Bay County, Michigan. His relationship to them is listed as "boarder."
The 1930 Census[6] shows him at age 38 with Mr. Beattie, who is widowed, in Williams Township, Bay County, Michigan. Otto's relationship to Mr. Beattie is listed as "hired man." This census states that Otto was not able to read and write. This was confirmed by his step son, Chester McRorie, who remembered that "Otto could not read the Bible."[7]
Otto married Marie (Schmidt) McRorie on 14 Jul 1934 in Bay City, Bay County, Michigan.[8] Marie had three children from her first marriage, who refered to Otto as "Daddy" and each of them stated that he was a wonderful, loving, and patient father. Otto and Marie also had two children together:
The 1940 Census[9] shows him at age 48 with his wife, three children, and Alan Beattie, listed as his "stepfather", in Williams Township, Bay County, Michigan.
He died in 1943 in Michigan[1] and is buried at Pine Grove Cemetery, Lot #347, in Fisherville, Bay County, Michigan.[10]
The McRorie children that Marie brought into the marriage, Helen, Cathernmae, and Chester have each said he was a truly a wonderful step-father, and called him "Daddy."
His step-son Chester McRorie remarked, "Much of the man I am today is because of Otto." [7] Those who know Chester will think that is a wonderful compliment to Otto.
