Mary Pope was born Marion Kyriakou on December 15, 1907, in Chicago, Illinois. [1]
Her family moved to Detroit, Michigan to work at the Ford plant. After living on Gladwin street for a period of time, they moved to Cottage Grove in Highland Park and bought "the farm" at 17717 Oakland St for $3,500. [2] Mary attended second grade at the little white schoolhouse in Greenfield Park.
In 1926, Mary married George Makis, a Greek immigrant from Chios, in Detroit Michigan. After a diagnosis of tuberculosis, doctors recommended that George return to Greece. Mary was in the late stages of pregnancy, and George returned to Chios without her, where he died, two months before their daughter, Georgette was born. [3]
Mary remarried William "Slim" Pope in 1929. [4] They had six more children together.
