Biography

Mary Lambert was the eldest daughter of John Lambert of Calton in Yorkshire and his wife Frances Lister. She was baptised on 13 September 1642 at Thornton, the seat of the Lister family in Yorkshire. [1]

She may have been the Mary Lambert, age 21, who married a Robert Wallopp of All Hallows Barking, London, licence date 16 February 1663. [2] If so, the marriage was a brief one, as by 1667 she had joined her mother on Guernsey, where her father was imprisoned after the restoration of the monarchy. [3]

Some time between 1665 and 1667, she married (apparently by elopement) Charles Hatton, son of Sir Christopher Hatton, Governor of Guernsey and her father's jailer. [4][5] This union caused a significant uproar, casting aspersions on Governor Hatton's vigilance in custody of his prisoner. He wrote: 'Attempts have been made to accuse me of fault, because of the misfortune of my son's marriage with a prisoner's daughter there, whose father was attainted, and she had no portion. I did not know of the match till a year after and then I turned my son out of doors, and have never given him a penny since .. .'; [6] In consequence, the freedom of Mary's father was curtailed. [7] [8]

This appears to have been a love match, as it was certainly not to their financial advantage, although Mary Lambert did, it seems, have a very small portion., thanks to King Charles II. They also received assistance from Charles' brother Christopher Hatton after he had acceeded to his father's estate. The marriage had issue, but all the children died young, including a son Charles in 1672. [4]

Mary Hatton died some time after 1673. Charles Hatton remarried in 1686, but had no more children. [4]

Research Notes

Mary Lambert has been attached here as a spouse of Robert Wallop. However, the only source for such a marriage is the licence and allegation from 16 February 1663, in which the Robert Wallopp is described as "Wallopp, Robert, of All Hallows Barking, London, gent., widower, 30". The Robert Wallop attached would have been over 60 at that date.

Also, Mary Lambert is known to have married Charles Hatton by 1667, so could not have died in 1666. This death date is unsourced, deriving solely from the date of Robert Wallop's marriage to Elizabeth Thomson in 1666.

Accordingly, the marriage to Robert Wallop-39 has been detached.

It remains unclear if this marriage licence [2] was actually for this Mary Lambert ("Mary Lambert, of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, spinster, about 21, daughter of John Lambert, of Craven, co. York, gent., who consents "). Her age, and the details of her father, are correct. If so, the Robert Wallopp she married would have died shortly thereafter, as Mary was with her mother on Guernsey by at least 1667, when she married Hatton.
