Biography

Baptism: 31 Mar 1577[1]

Parents: Rudolph Landis & Anna Bruggbacher[2]

Location: Horgen[3]

Death: 4 Mar 1650 Hirzel[4]

Oswald's first wife was Margaret Schneveli. Together they had 12 children the last born in 1620. Margaret died in 1627. Oswald married Anna Schappi in 1628. Anna died after 1646. Up until May 2018, it was recorded that Oswald Landis was married the third time in 1643 to Catharina Bruppacher. Review of the Horgen census records of the households shows Anna Schappi was still alive thru 1646 and thus it was a different Oswald Landis who married Catharina Bruppacher in 1643.

Catharina may have been a relative. But in any event, this Oswald [Landis-144] did not marry Catharina Bruppacher. The following is an explanation provided by Bruce [Fosnocht-12] as to who did marry Catharina Bruppacher also spelled Bruggbacher. As the ancient census records show there were many Landis families in the area around what is now Zurich and except for the descendants of Johannes [Landis132] and his wife Katarina [Schinz-2] they are not yet profiled on WikiTree. - The 1646 census records from Horgen show that there were two Oswald Landis marriages one in 1643 and one in 1644. The 1646 census shows two households with an Oswald Landis as the head.

The first at Moosacher is Oswald [Landis-144] or "Oswald der alt" of Moosacher who is still living with his second wife Anna Schappi in 1646. So he can't be the one who was married to Catharina Bruppacher in the year 1643. Of the two Oswald Landis marriages, the one in 1644 is shown to be the son of Oswald der alt. The son, named Oswald married Barbara Oberholzer. He and Barbara are listed in the same household as the father, in Moosacher.

The second at Neuenhus shows an Oswald Landis (born 1621) living in the household of his father Erhard Landis and mother Elsbeth Hurlimann Landis.

Later census records show that the two young Oswald Landis families continue to have children through 1650. Oswald der alt (Oswald the old) dies in Moosacher in 1650.

Oswald Landis born in 1626, the son of Oswald der alt is eliminated because he's the one who married Barbara Oberholzer. This is one of the younger Oswald Landis families.

There is another Oswald Landis who was born in 1625, but he is the son of Melcher Landis and this Oswald died as a toddler in 1627.

So with the information in the records from that time the only choice for the marriage of an Oswald Landis in 1643 is the Oswald Landis born in 1621, son of Erhard Landis and Elsbeth Hurlimann. Notes within the census records show that Erhard Landis's son, Oswald is living with him in Neuenhus in 1643 at age 20. He is thus logically the Oswald Landis to marry Catharina Bruppacher in October 1643. Oswald Landis born in 1621 is no longer listed in the family household of Erhard Landis in 1646. No information is given on the parents of Catharina Bruppacher.
