Mary Lane was born at 10am on 10th November 1849 in Charlton Abbots, Gloucestershire, the daughter of Harriet Lane and an unnamed father [1]; Harriet's husband Robert had been sentenced to seven years' transportation in October 1848 (see his biography). Harriet registered the birth 17 days later in Guiting, Winchcomb, making her mark as she could not write her name. Harriet's maiden name was Shotten [2].

She moved to London at some point between 1861 and 1878, but I have not yet found her for sure in the 1871 census (see Research Notes).
Marriage and children: Aged 28, Mary married William Thurkle (a butcher aged 30) on 9th June 1878 at St George's Church, Battersea Wandsworth [8]. The marriage entry states that both were living at 19 Moat Street; that William's father William was a carman; and that Mary's father Robert was a stone mason (he is not listed as deceased). Both William and Harriet wrote their own name, and the witnesses were William James and Emily Thurkle.
