Joseph Lane was born in 1826 in Barnwell, South Carolina, United States, son of Osborne Lane (1783–1844) and Mary Elizabeth Roundtree (1789–1866).
Joseph (17) married Martha Matilda Thurston (18) (born on July 11, 1825 in Barnwell) in 1844. Their children were:
