Biography

Mahlon Egbert "Bert" Lantz was born 26 Jan 1875 in Earlton, Neosho County, Kansas.[1] He made his first appearance in the Kansas State Census in Canville Township, where Earlton is located, at the age of 2 months.[2] His family moved to a farm near Sedan in Chautaqua County in 1878.[3] Mahlon appears with his parents in this location on the 1880 U.S. Federal Census,[4] on the 1885 Kansas state census,[5] and on the 1895 Kansas State Census.[6]

Mahlon registered for service during the Spanish-American War on 25 May 1899 in Sedan.[7] In 1900, he is stationed with the United States Army in the Philippines where he is recorded twice in the military schedules. His first appearance is at San Miguel Station where he is attached to the 20th Regiment Infantry, Company K.[8] His second appearance is with the Hospital Corps Attachment at the Santa Mesa US Army Hospital.[9] He was dishonorably discharged 27 Jan 1901 in Manila.[10]

He married Verna King in Chautauqua County, Kansas on 22 Sep 1903.[11] Mahlon and Verna apparently resided in California around 1907 when daughter Fleeta was born.[12] Mahlon and his family could not be located in the 1910 U.S. Federal Census. They suffered the death of a child who is buried in Sedan, Chautauqua County, Kansas on 27 Feb 1910.[13] It is unclear whether they resided there at the time of Wayne's death or if they simply buried him near their families. They were in Oregon by the time daughter Dolores was born about 1912.[14] They moved to Washington by the time son Mahlon, Jr. was born 14 Jan 1916.[15]

Mahlon registered in the "Old Man's Draft" of 12 Sep 1918, described as being of medium height and build with brown hair and brown eyes.[16] Mahlon also served in World War I.[17]

Mahlon and his family appear on the 1920 census in Wishkah, Grays Harbor County, Washington, where they are living on Wishkah Road, and he is farming.[18] Mahlon and his family are residing in Glenns Ferry, Elmore County, Idaho in 1930 where he is working for the Union Pacific Railroad.[19] Mahlon and his wife are residing north of Second Street in Glenns Ferry, Elmore County, Idaho in 1940 where he is employed as a machinist's helper for the railroad.[20] He died 20 Dec 1955 in Boise, Ada County, Idaho.[21] He is buried at Glenns Rest Cemetery in Glenns Ferry, Elmore County, Idaho.[22]
