Biography

James, the son of Robert Large and his wife Mary, was born at Great Clacton, Essex, in 1790 and baptized at St John the Baptist church, Great Clacton, on 9 May 1790.[1]

James, a bachelor of this parish, married Martha Bradley by licence at Marylebone, Middlesex, on 24 August 1817. Witnesses were Fr[anci]s Bradley and Priscilla Bradley.[2]

James and Martha had children including:

  1. Ellen Martha, born at Marylebone on 25 August 1818 and baptized at St Mary's church, Marylebone, on 22 September 1818.[3] Ellen Martha died when she was two and a half years old and was buried at Westminster on 21 March 1821.[4]
  2. Emma Matilda, born at Marylebone on 18 June 1822 and baptized at St Mary's church, Marylebone, on 11 July 1822.[5]

James' wife Martha, resident at Old Cavendish Street, Oxford Street, died on 25 May 1824[6] and was buried at Marylebone on 1 June 1824.[7]

In 1841, James, an upholsterer, was living at 18 Old Cavendish Street, Cavendish Square, Marylebone.[8]

In 1851 James was living at 29 Bark Place, Paddington, Middlesex, with his "wife" Martha and "their" two children.[9] Ten years later, James and his family have moved to 36 St Petersburg Street, Paddington.[10] By 1871 James and Martha have moved again, to 6 Wilton Terrace, Kensington, James having retired from the upholstery business.[11]

James died at his residence, 6 Wilton Terrace, on 11 September 1874,[12][13] and was buried in a private, brick built grave at Brompton Cemetery, London, on 16 September 1874.[14]

James' Will, with a codicil, was proved at the Principal Registry on 10 October 1874 by Henry Walter Large, of Medina Lodge, Ravenscourt-square, in the County of Middlesex, the Son, and Robert Wilks Mann, of Whitehall Hayes, Middlesex, Gentlemen, two of the executors. Effects were under £25,000.[15][16]
