Biography

Marcel was born 15 May 1838 to Ignace Larivière and Marie Dubois. He was baptized on the 22nd of July in St-Michel church (then mission) of Sherbrooke[1]. His place of birth may have been Compton township, where his first known sibling was born. Delay between birth and baptism would indicate they were not in Sherbrooke itself, although this might also be due to St-Michel still being only a Mission, with no resident priest. The records for these baptisms all are done by a Missionnary priest.[2]

He married Marie Delphine Cyr in St-Michel church of Sherbrooke 8 January 1861[3]. Marcel and Delphine made their home in nearby Stoke Centre. Numerous records for their children indicate that Marcel and Delphine emigrated with their family to Sanford, Maine in February of 1879. Marcel worked at the cotton mill there for a short time. The 1880 US Census is the last viable record for Marcel. Delphine's obituary reveals that she relocated to Biddeford, ME with her children in 1882. She remarried to a Civil War veteran named Adriel Leighton in 1886 and relocated the family to the nearby town of Dayton, Maine which is connected to the city of Biddeford. Exhaustive searches of Sanford/Springvale determined that Marcel was not buried there. Searches of Biddeford and Dayton and surrounding towns turned up no evidence that he ever resided there, or was employed or was buried there. No viable death record has been found for him in either the US or Canada.

Marriage records for two of Marcel's sons indicate that he passed away prior to 1898.

Side note: Delphine is buried in the family lot belonging to their son, Edward (Edouard) in the Old Section, Lot 416, Grave 2 at St Joseph Cemetery in Biddeford, ME. Their son Guillaume who died at a very young age is also buried there with her. These facts were carefully researched by Rick LaRiviere with guidance and corroboration by St Joseph Cemetry staff and the York County Franco-American Genealogy Association.

Lariviere-399 and Lariviere-168 do not represent the same person because: Though I know this to be the same person, I will not merge them and obliterate the information the other manager believes to be true. I do have in my possession documentation that proves the other theory incorrect, I choose to present my information in hopes that the other manager will correct their profile(s).
