John Short Larke (1840 - 1910)

Biography

John S. Larke was Canada's first trade commissioner. He represented the country in Australia beginning in 1895.^[1]

He was born in 1840 near Stratton, Cornwall.^[2] His parents, Charles Larke and Grace Yeo Short, emigrated to Canada when he was four. After graduating from Victoria College in Cobourg, John worked as a teacher before becoming involved with the Oshawa Vindicator newspaper.

In 1870 John married Eliza Bain in Oshawa, Ontario. ^[3] They had four children: William, Frederick, Eva and Percy.

In 1879 he left journalism for manufacturing. While heading up the Oshawa Stove Company, he also served as reeve and warden of Ontario County.

He passed away in 1910 in Australia. ^[4]
