As Wisconsin Territory neared statehood in the 1840's, changes in the documented status of Mixed Blood Native Americans were required. The United States Government did not recognise a mixed catagory in it's documentation. Each person had to declare White, Black, or Indian status. Those of mixed blood had to choose one and relinquish identity of any others. Those Menominee mixed blood people who chose Indian would then live on the Reservation according to those policies. Those of Menominee mixed blood who chose White would not live on the Reservation, and received a single monitary payment for relinquishing Indian status.
