Ann was born in 1847[1] in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England[2][3][4][5], and baptised on the 22nd February 1847 at St. Peter, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England, the daughter of John Lateward (coach builder)[6] and Ann Lateward of Bilston Street[7].
At the "BOROUGH PETTY SESSIONS, Monday before the Mayor (T.M. Southwell, Esq.), and T. Nock, Esq. Using Abusive Language - Ann Jervis, a married woman, residing in the Low Town, was charged by Ann Lateward, dressmaker, residing also in the Low Town, with using abusive language towards her on the 13th inst. (May 1871). The complainant stated that she met the defendant, on Saturday last, on Waterloo Terrace, when she accosted her, and asked her when she was coming to measure her for a dress, and bring the one back she had robbed her off [sic]; she (witness) proceeded on her way, when the defendant shouted after her, and called her a thief and stated it was not the first time that she had done the same. Alice Sanders was called and corroborated the evidence of Miss Lateward. - The defendant indignantly denied that she called the complainant a thief, but admitted that she had told her that she had robbed her of two yards of stuff out of a dress that she had made for her. -The Bench considered the case proved and fined the defendant 2s. and 8s. costs."[8]
Within weeks, Anne was back in court. "BRIDGNORTH - BOUROUGH PETTY SESSIONS - Monday before the Mayor (T.M. Southwell, Esq.), Thomas W. W. Browne, Esq., and the Rev. F. H. W. Whitmore. - Using Insulting Language Ann Jervis, a married woman, residing in the Low Town, was charged with using insulting words towards Anne Lateward, on the 15th ult. (May 1871). - Mr. Batte, who appeared for the defendant, asked the complainant if the defendant would promise not to insult her again and pay the costs 8s. 6d., would she be willing to withdraw the summons. - This was acceded to, and the defendant made such promise in the court."[9]
