Eliza Lawton was born on Mana Island about the year 1842, the daughter of an English whaler and Te Rangitapuae, a woman of rank of the Ngati Whakatere of Ngati Raukawa. Eliza, or Raiha, later married Hemi Kuti Te Kanawa (James Cootes jnr) a chief of the Ngati Te Ra hapu of Ngati Toa. Hemi was the son of the whaler James Cootes who had previously been the lover of Te Rangitapuae. When James left her to travel to the South Island she composed a waiata aroha expressing her affection and sense of loss (see "Nga Moteatea", Pt.2, pp.104-105). Hemi and Raiha had a large family of about 14 children. For further information see Otaki Historical Society Journal Vol 5 1982.
