1. DNA shows a connection to Lay Family owners of enslaved people. I have two DNA matches to Zacharia Lay's (b. 1765-1853) son Sampson Lay (b. 1818-1880) through his daughter Mary Ann Lay. I believe that Emanuel was named after Zachariah's father, Emanuel. I believe that Emanuel's mother was one of two enslaved women that Zachariah inherited from his father, Emanuel, who he inherited from his father, Abraham. They are Winney (a Negro woman) and Rachel (a Negro girl) in Emmanuel Lays's will.
2. Emanuel is listed as the father of Sylva on the Freedman's bureau record.
