John Henry Layman, son of William and Catherine (Hess) Layman, was born in Hagerstown, Maryland on 11 June 1850. He is found in the 1860 census at the age of 10 living with his parents in Hagerstown.[1] Sometime in or before 1870, the family moved to Greencastle in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, where John met his future wife, Amelia Jane Zeigler.[2] The couple made their home first in Greencastle, where John rented a home and worked as a day laborer.[3][4]
Sometime between the 1900 and 1910 census, John returned to Hagerstown with Amelia and those of their children still living at home. Back in Hagerstown, he assumed the original German spelling of his surname, which his family had when they emigrated to the U.S. and and for a few generations thereafter. Thus, he appears in the 1910 and 1920 census as John Lehman.[5][6]
At his death in 1923, John Layman was buried at Greencastle's Cedar Hill Cemetery, where many of his family also lie at rest. The footstone on his grave is inscribed with both his first and middle names while his headstone displays the anglicized/legal spelling of his surname.[7]
