Biography

Peter was born about January 10, 1813 in St Helier, Bailiwick of Jersey. (Jersey Island birth record not located but the cited date is listed in all entries for Peter in Canadian Civil Service Lists as 1814.^[1] His parents were Phillip and Anne Lesueur.^[2]

Peter's first marriage was to Barbara Dawson. Barbara Dawson and Peter Le Sueur were married by license at the Wesley Methodist Church in Quebec City on April 7, 1836.^[3]

In 1842, P H Le Sueur and 3 other persons were tenants in a home on St Genevieve Street in Notre Dame. He was employed as a bookkeeper.^[4]

From various birth records of his children, the couple were Methodists and Peter was a banker in Quebec. The couple had 8 children who survived Peter. By 1854 Philip had joined the Civil Service, originally in the Post Master's Office in charge of money orders. He would serve in that office for 24 years.

In 1861 Peter and Barbara were living in a 3-story stone house in Quebec City with 7 children: William, Martha, Annie, Eleanor, Charles, Isabella and Eugene.^[5]

Peter moved to Ottawa and in 1868 was living on Kent Street in the City of Ottawa. ^[6] In 1871 Peter and Barbara were in Ottawa, and daughters Martha and Isabella, as well as son Eugene, remained at home.^[7]

After Barbara's death, Peter married for a second time on October 2, 1878 to Bertha Cecelia Ross in Ottawa and it's on their marriage record that his parent's name are discovered.^[2] They resided in Ottawa.^[8]

Peter died on February 14, 1896 in Ottawa, Carleton, Ontario.^[9] He was buried in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa.^[10]

Research Notes

Misspelling of name on marriage record: The Drouin Collection records the marriage between Barbara Davison and Peter LeSueson. However, if you examine the handwritten entry, you will see, quite clearly, the names should be Barbara Dawson and Peter LeSueur. Also, Wm Dawson is one of the witnesses.
