Biography

Barbara (Dawson) Le Sueur was born in County Durham, England.

Barbara was baptised on October 15, 1817 in Bishopwearmouth, Durham, England. She is the daughter of William Dawson and Martha Hird. ^[1]

Barbara Dawson and Peter Le Sueur were married by license at the Wesley Methodist Church in Quebec City on April 7, 1836. One of the witnesses was Wm Dawson. ^[2]

From various birth records of their children, the couple were Methodists and Peter was a banker in Quebec. The couple had 8 children who survived Barbara.

In 1861 Peter and Barbara were living in a 3-story stone house in Quebec City with 7 children: William, Martha, Annie, Eleanor, Charles, Isabella, and Eugene.^[3]

Peter and Barbara would move to Ottawa when he took a job with the civil service and in 1868 they were living on Kent Street in the City of Ottawa.^[4] In 1871 Peter and Barbara were in Ottawa, and daughters Martha and Isabella, as well as son Eugene, remained at home.^[5]

Barbara died at the age of 57 on April 6, 1875. She was buried at Beechwood Cemetery.^[6]

Research Notes

Misspelling of name on marriage record: Transcription of The Drouin Collection shows the marriage between Barbara Davison and Peter LeSueson. However, if you examine the handwritten entry, you will see, quite clearly, the names should be Barbara Dawson and Peter LeSueur. Also, Wm Dawson is one of the witnesses.

From family notes: The three Dawson sisters, Barbara Le Sueur, Eleanor Shaw, and Mary Ann Henderson, arranged to have their babies baptized together on 24 Nov 1857. The triple baptism included Eugene Arthur Le Sueur born 31 Aug 1857, Mary Ann Dawson Shaw born 19 Sept 1857, and Gideon Arthur Henderson born 3 June 1857.
