Biography

Benjamin Leadbetter was born on 16 Jun 1781, the son of Increase Leadbetter and Elizabeth McCurdy (Calderwood) Leadbetter. According to a transcription of an unknown source in the vital records of Leeds, Maine, he was born on that date at Camden, Maine,[1] but this is uncertain; see the discussion of Increase and Elizabeth Leadbetter's residence from 1774 to 1785 in the "Residence Before 1785" section of Increase's profile. After his parents moved to Livermore, Maine (then in Massachusetts, and in the portion of that town that became part of Leeds in 1802), they recorded the births of their first six children there, with dates that match the transcription from the Leeds records.[2]
